Run, Run, Run

Run, Run, Run
The streets are empty
So is my head
No time for thought tonight
I'm lost in the pattern of my own breath
Summer coming to a close
I've got miles behind me and miles to go
For now just me and the lamp post
These days I keep my goals so simple
Run, Run, Run
I don't know where
All I know is my legs will take me there
Run, Run, Run
The streets are empty
So is my bed
No time for sleep tonight
I'm lost in the pattern of my own steps, my own breath
Run, Run, Run
I don't know where
All I know is my legs will take me there
Run, Run, Run

Cross Country: The Song
On your marks
Get set
Go
Get out
Get out, or get buried
Eyes up
Have your wits about you
There's elbows flying, blood gushing from your knee
I can't shoot no basketball
I can't make no team at all
I can't help if running away comes so natural
800
Two minutes and some number I can't ever really hear
Truth be told, I miss the sounds
Of even my own mother's cheers
The only words that come through clear
Coach screaming "Get your ass in gear!"
And the middle miles
Seem to float on by
Til that time you decide
On fight or flight
And laugh when you realize
They're really the same thing, right?
I can't punt or pass worth a lick
Catch me on the right day I've got one helluva kick
Come to my home course I'll show ya first hand kid

Song for a Childhood Hero
Back when our lives ran parallel
Back when I thought I knew me well
Way before that last last lap bell
Peter if you've changed, brother I can't tell
Same as this road it all seems to stay the same
If anything is different it's only in a subtle way
Kinda like a tree after years of heavy rain
Despite all your growth, something's constant with the way your branches hang
Nostalgia hits and it's off to the races again
Going side by side down a side street with an old friend
Years removed
Same groove
We got the same roots
Ain't it fun to pretend
We're back in high school again
Don't know when we all grew into men
But I don't feel any different
I know now it looks smaller at 17
The world wide open, all mine for the taking
A boy and a dream, a track and a plan
Don't you wish it could all be so simple again?
Life to me is slow and oh so strange
Who'd have known the man would outlive the last name
More than anything, I think I miss the pain
And sharing it with some boys who seemed just as crazy
Ain't it fun to pretend
We're back in high school again
Don't know when we all grew into men
But I don't feel any different

Another Northern Winter

Another Northern Winter
Madison, early January
The air is thin
The streets sheeted white
Not long now
Til the sun goes down
The city's vacant
All the students on study break
The landscape is a blanket
From campus to Camp Randall
From the forest to the frozen lake
No one around
See the air move, feel the wind howl
All the summer trails you trotted down
Have all but disappeared for now
The Capitol sidewalk seems fair for this time of year
I know this is just the start of another northern winter
Sure someday spring will come
Til then I'll keep this frozen air in my lungs
Run around this isthmus
I went home four days for Christmas
Stare across Mendota
The whole thing frozen over
Lose the skyline in the peripheral swirl
Of snow

Ballad of the Injured Runner
Monday morning I sprained my leg
By Tuesday started to compensate and
Strained my calf
Imagine that
Wednesday I was on the shelf
By Thursday I'd regained some health
Maybe Friday I can try to try again
Laid up all weekend
September started with pinched nerves
October opened with a stress fracture
My world's over
Ice and Ibuprofen
November got back on my horse
First race back on my home course
Wouldn't ya know?
Tripped into a hole
So they say it goes by all too fast
Ya and someday soon the past is just the past
It takes more than the biggest balls of brass
For every run ya done, could've been your last
Freshman year tending to tendonitis
As a sophomore, succumbed by bouts of bronchitis
Tell yourself "It's Okay, I'm only halfway"
Junior june full of hundred mile weeks
Senior sounds appropriate given the nature of my knees
La di da da la di da da
Ahh
La da ahhh
I will always recall my first real steps
How alive I felt going head to head
Neck and neck
No love loss, but still respect
When I'm too old to get around the track
I can close my eyes and I'll be right back
Shins aching, still every step worth taking
So they say it goes by all too fast
Ya and someday soon the past is just the past
It takes more than the biggest balls of brass
For every run ya done, could've been your last

Looking Back

Looking Back
No more mornings dreaming of what could have been
No more of the stories you tell yourself so you can keep on sleeping in
I'm done living life like that
I'm done looking back
No more of this will I won't I, should I shown't I shit
When I make my move you can make your bet
This time it's gonna stick
The secret's the same as it always was
Because the secret is
There really isn't one
Off I run
Now I'm gone
Time keeps moving on
